In Search of Style: Wanderlust

There's something adventurous about making plans to travel abroad. Whether you’re about to hop on the next plane overseas or even if you’re staying put in Ottawa, try out these globe-trotting styles seen on the Spring/ Summer runways.

It’s easy to get on trend and stay cool as the humidity climbs and the hot weather takes over. If you’re considering packing your bags, the first thing you should grab is a collection of lightweight tunics, long breezy dresses and comfortable shoes. All of this advice is true for Ottawa’s hot summers. You’ll want an outfit that is fine-spun enough to catch a breeze to cool you down. My favourite travel outfit is a long maxi dress. It’s conservative when necessary and can be worn in the day or the evening. Choose a bright colour or interesting print that will remind you of your travels long after the trip comes to an end.

You’ll always revert to your most comfortable pair of shoes, so pack a collection of flats. Runners can be both breathable and stylish too!

This season, fashion designers adopted exotic embellishments and plundered ideas from the four corners of the earth. Vogue’s style editor Emma Elwick-Bates describes this tribal beat as “a veritable United Nations of textures and nomadic finds exuding a global charisma.” Achieve this ‘world traveler’ look with a collection of exotic designs, scarf- like tops, and subtle tribal prints to give an elegant nod to ethnic origins. In stores now are elaborate pleats and folds, native prints and a palette of dusty desert tones that bring the call of the wild to city style.

TRAVEL essentials

Don’t leave home without a sun hat and a cross-body satchel. The hat will shield you from the sun and you’ll be hands free to take all the photos you want. Opt for bright luggage so your bag is easy to pick out of the sea of black bags at the airport.

ON THE Runway

Dolce & Gabbana, Givenchy and Dries Van Noten were just a few of the collections offering eclectic and tribal designs. It seems as though designers took their style cues straight from the pages of National Geographic, showing wild prints and earthy folklore fabrics.

To avoid appearing as though you ventured into ‘costume’ territory, stick with individual pieces, like a
statement blouse or an animal print skirt.
